Story Behind the Story – Killing Game

Story: Killing Game
Published in: Crepuscular Magazine [web]
Length: 100 words
Brief synopsis:

How the story came to be: y’all played hundred line? lol

It’s that game with 100 endings made by the Daganronpa guy (and also the Zero Escape guy!). As you can imagine, the characters are all pretty…extreme. One is essentially the MC from “My Heart is a Chainsaw” by Stephen Graham Jones. Not only does she love slasher flicks, but eroge and killing games (like Danganronpa!).

So my thoughts were: what would a real life version of this person be, someone who wants to be a serial killer? But they’re at least aware enough to not want to deal with all the yucky parts/logistical nightmares? How can you “kill” a bunch of people, but you don’t get literal blood on your hands?

And then I remembered The Good Place.

So, there you go. I love my reusable cotton produce bags and going to the refill store with my big ol’ bottle of Dr. Bronners and putting more Dr. Bronners in it it. I hope that people reading this story realize, oh, right. I Do These Things. My actions are killing people, but in ways that I do not perceive it and, therefore, do not think about it. I should do better.

PUBLISHING THE STORY

Relative Confidence Level Before Submitting: idk a 4? 100 word stories are a hard sell as you can imagine.

Rejections before finding a home: 17, which isn’t terrible!

The eventual home: Crepuscular Magazine. They publish short, weird little things like this, so it was a great fit!
